1) Electrician in Longhope for Small Jobs, Fault Finding and Electrical Upgrades

Recently I was called to a property in Latchen after the downstairs lighting had suddenly stopped working following a storm. It would have been easy to assume the weather had caused the fault, but after testing the circuit I found the timing was actually a coincidence. Mice had gnawed through cables in the attic, damaging the lighting circuit. I repaired the damaged cable with a suitable junction, tested the circuit and left the downstairs lights working again.

That sort of fault finding and small jobs work makes up a large part of what I do around Longhope. I’m Darren from DMC Electrical, with more than 20 years’ electrical experience. I’m NICEIC registered and DMC Electrical is a Which? Trusted Trader.

If you need an electrician in Longhope, you deal directly with our family business. I carry out my own quotations and electrical work, arrive in uniform in a labelled van, provide clear terms and conditions for both small and larger jobs and aim to respond to enquiries on the same day.

2) Electrical work across Longhope

Longhope has a real mixture of properties, and the electrical work reflects that.

There are very old black-and-white cottages, former council houses dating from around the 1950s that have often been occupied by the same families for many years, and newer estates built from the mid-1970s through to the present day.

Around the village there are also larger farmhouses, manor-style properties and agricultural outbuildings. More recently, some owners with larger houses, land and outbuildings have developed holiday accommodation and Airbnb-style lets.

I regularly work on all of these types of properties.

Typical jobs include:

3) Small electrical jobs are welcome

You don’t need to be planning a rewire or major renovation before calling me.

Some of my most regular work in Longhope involves the jobs homeowners simply want finished properly — fitting a cooker, installing a bathroom fan, replacing a light fitting or moving a socket.

At Keenshill, for example, I recently fitted new decorative light fittings in one of the newer houses. The customer had tried to install them but found that a little more electrical knowledge was needed. I completed the lighting work and also fitted a new cooker.

I’m happy to take on these smaller jobs, and my pricing starts from £95, depending on what is involved.

If you have been searching for an electrician near me because several small electrical jobs have accumulated around the house, I’m happy to look at them together rather than requiring every visit to be a large project.

4) Fault finding in older rural properties

Older farmhouses and cottages around Longhope can present different electrical problems from newer estate properties.

I have attended properties where circuits are tripping because cables are deteriorating, older RCDs are becoming unreliable or wiring has been damaged by rodents.

The Latchen lighting fault is a good example of why diagnosis matters.

Because the lights failed around the time of a storm, the obvious assumption was that the two events were connected. Testing showed otherwise, and inspection of the attic revealed the damaged cables.

Rather than changing switches, lights or protective devices unnecessarily, I work through the circuit and use test results to narrow down the actual cause.

5) Electrical improvements during renovation

Older properties often need electrical upgrades as they are renovated.

I recently worked at a cottage in Hinders Lane where inspection and testing identified issues that needed addressing as the installation was improved, including smoke alarm provision and RCD protection.

The owners later wanted a hot tub on the patio, so I installed a new electrical supply with additional RCD protection suitable for the new work.

This is something I consider whenever modern equipment is added to an older installation.

It is not simply a matter of finding the nearest circuit and connecting something new. I need to assess the existing circuit, consumer unit and protective arrangements first.

6) EICRs for rental and holiday properties

I also carry out Electrical Installation Condition Reports for landlords, holiday accommodation and homeowners who want a clearer picture of their electrical installation.

This is particularly relevant around Longhope as more rural properties and outbuildings are being used for guest accommodation.

An EICR involves inspecting and testing the fixed electrical installation and recording its condition. If the report highlights issues, I can explain them clearly and provide a quotation for any electrical work required.

I’ve also carried out a wide range of ongoing electrical work at the Yew Tree pub and guest house, including EICRs, fans, smoke alarms, lighting and electrical work associated with appliances such as dishwashers.

I continue to support the business as new electrical jobs arise.

7) Modern electrical additions in Longhope homes

In newer properties the work is often different.

Cookers and hobs are replaced, smoke alarms reach the end of their service life and homeowners want new decorative lighting or extra sockets.

In Brooklea Gardens, I recently fitted an illuminated bathroom mirror with a built-in demisting function. It gives the customer improved visibility while helping keep the mirror clear in a steamy bathroom.

These jobs may be relatively small, but I still check the existing supply and carry out the work properly rather than treating small electrical additions as unimportant.

8) Consumer unit and RCD upgrades

I also replace and upgrade consumer units where the existing installation would benefit from improved protection or needs alteration as part of renovation work.

An older consumer unit does not automatically need replacing simply because of its age.

I look at the existing protective devices, RCD provision, condition of the installation and what new electrical equipment or circuits the customer wants to add.

Where an upgrade is appropriate, I explain why and include it clearly within the quotation.

9) What happens when you contact DMC Electrical?

When you call, either Kate or I will take the initial details.

Where I need to see the installation before pricing the job, I arrange a convenient visit and carry out the quotation myself.

That means the electrician who discusses the job with you is the same person who returns to complete it.

My pricing for smaller jobs starts from £95. Larger work is quoted according to the actual scope, with clear terms and conditions supplied whether the job is large or small.

I aim to respond on the same day, turn up when agreed and keep your home clean and tidy while I work.

11) FAQs

How much does an electrician in Longhope cost?

My pricing for smaller electrical jobs starts from £95, depending on the work and materials involved. For larger jobs I’ll assess what is required and give you a clear quotation before the work begins.

Do you take on small electrical jobs?

Yes. Small jobs such as cookers, fans, lights, sockets and switches make up a regular part of my work. I recently fitted decorative lights and a new cooker for customers at Keenshill.

Can you fault find a circuit that keeps tripping?

Yes. I use electrical testing to narrow down the cause rather than simply replacing components. At a recent Latchen job, a lighting fault initially thought to be storm-related turned out to be cables damaged by mice in the attic.

Do you carry out EICRs?

Yes. I carry out Electrical Installation Condition Reports for homeowners, landlords and holiday accommodation. I also carry out EICRs as part of my ongoing work with local businesses and guest accommodation.

Can you install a supply for a hot tub?

Yes, where the existing electrical installation is suitable or can be upgraded appropriately. At a recent Hinders Lane property I installed a new supply with additional RCD protection for a hot tub being fitted on the patio.

Can you replace smoke alarms?

Yes. I regularly replace and upgrade smoke alarms, including older alarms that have reached the end of their service life. I can look at the existing installation and advise what is required.

How quickly will you respond?

I aim to respond to enquiries on the same day. If I need to see the property before giving you an accurate quotation, I’ll arrange a suitable time and turn up when agreed.
