1) Garage Supplies in Huntley – Sockets, Lighting & New Electrical Feeds

This week I’ve been adding extra sockets to a garage in Lambourne Avenue, Huntley so the customer can use the space properly for his hobbies. The existing electrical installation simply didn’t give him enough usable outlets where he needed them.

That is a common reason I’m asked to improve garages. The building may already have electricity, but perhaps only one or two sockets were fitted originally, the lighting is poor, or the supply was never designed for the way the garage is now being used.

I’m Darren from DMC Electrical. I have more than 20 years’ experience as an electrician and I personally carry out the quote visit and the installation work. For homeowners and landlords looking for garage supplies in Huntley, I can assess what is already there, discuss how you want to use the garage and design the electrical work around that.

2) Making a Garage More Useful

Garages often change use over time.

A space that originally only needed a light and one socket might later be used as a workshop, hobby room, utility area or somewhere to run extra appliances.

That usually means the original electrics no longer suit what the customer wants to do.

Typical garage electrical work can include:

  • Additional double sockets
  • New lighting
  • Brighter lighting for detailed work
  • New electrical supplies to garages with no existing power
  • Small garage consumer units
  • Outside lighting
  • Alterations to existing circuits
  • Electrical supplies for fridges, freezers and tools

The important part is deciding what the garage is going to be used for before simply adding fittings.

3) Recent Garage Electrical Work

A recent job in Huntley involved adding extra sockets to a garage in Lambourne Avenue.

The customer wanted to use the garage for hobbies, so having only limited socket positions was inconvenient. By adding outlets in more useful locations, the garage became much more practical without relying on extension leads.

Around the same time, I carried out similar work at a property in The Latchen, Longhope.

The garage already had two double sockets, but both were effectively occupied by a fridge and freezer. The customer needed extra outlets and had ended up using an extension lead fed through the kitchen window.

That clearly wasn’t a good long-term arrangement, so I installed additional sockets in the garage where they were actually needed.

These are both typical examples of garage supplies in Huntley and nearby villages: the electricity is already present, but the original installation is no longer adequate for the way the space is being used.

4) What If the Garage Has No Electricity at All?

Some garages need more than additional sockets.

Around a month ago I worked in a garage in Hinders Lane that had no electrical supply at all.

For that job I installed a new supply together with:

  • A small garage consumer unit
  • Three double sockets
  • Two bright strip lights
  • An outside floodlight

That completely changed how the building could be used.

Instead of treating the garage as a building with no usable power, the customer had proper lighting, sockets for equipment and an external light for the area outside.

Where a garage has no existing supply, I need to look at where the electrical feed can come from, the route between the house and garage and what the garage will eventually need to supply.

5) Getting the Lighting Right

Poor garage lighting is another common problem.

A single old fitting might be adequate for finding something on a shelf, but it may not be suitable if you're using the garage for hobbies or detailed work.

Good lighting becomes especially important where somebody is working with tools, repairing equipment, painting, assembling items or doing any task that requires seeing fine detail.

When I assess the garage, I look at the size and shape of the space and where the customer is likely to work.

Sometimes adding brighter fittings can make just as much difference as installing extra sockets.

The Hinders Lane garage is a good example. Two bright strip lights were installed as part of the new electrical system so the whole garage became much more usable.

6) Enough Sockets in the Right Places

Simply having electricity in the garage doesn't necessarily mean there are enough sockets.

Older installations may only have one or two outlets because that was all that was required when the garage was built.

Problems start when those sockets are permanently occupied by equipment such as:

  • Fridges
  • Freezers
  • Battery chargers
  • Power tools
  • Garden equipment

The temptation is then to start adding extension leads and multiway adaptors.

Rather than relying on extensions as a permanent arrangement, I can look at where extra fixed sockets would be most useful and whether the existing circuit is suitable for the proposed work.

7) What Happens During a Quote Visit?

When you contact DMC Electrical, Kate will normally take the initial details.

She’ll ask what you want to use the garage for, what electrical equipment is already installed and whether you know if there is already a supply to the building.

We’ll then arrange a suitable time for me to visit.

I personally attend the quote visit so I can see:

  • The existing electrical installation
  • The route to the garage
  • Available socket positions
  • Lighting requirements
  • The existing consumer unit
  • How you plan to use the garage

I then provide a no-obligation fixed-price quotation explaining the agreed work and how I expect to carry it out.

If you decide to proceed, I return and complete the work myself.

8) Checking the Existing Electrical Supply

Before adding new sockets or lighting, I need to understand what is already supplying the garage.

In some properties there may already be a suitable circuit that can be altered or extended.

In others, especially where the garage has no electrical supply, a new feed may be required.

I also check what protection is available at the existing consumer unit before deciding how the new work should be connected.

This is important because the right solution depends on the existing installation as well as what you want to add.

I don't assume that because there is already a cable running to a garage it is automatically suitable for additional loads.

9) How Long Does Garage Electrical Work Take?

A small alteration such as adding sockets to an existing suitable circuit may take around two hours.

A more involved garage installation with a new supply, consumer unit, sockets and lighting could take up to two days, depending on the cable route, access and amount of equipment being installed.

I'll assess the actual job before quoting so you know what is involved.

10) How Much Do Garage Supplies Cost?

Electrical work starts from £86.

The final cost depends on whether you already have a suitable supply, how many sockets or lights are required and whether a new feed or garage consumer unit needs to be installed.

I provide a fixed-price quotation for the work we agree.

That means you know the price before I start rather than receiving an open-ended labour bill afterwards.

12) FAQs

How much does it cost to add electricity to a garage?

Electrical work starts from £86, but installing a complete new garage supply will cost more than adding a socket to an existing suitable circuit. I visit first and provide a fixed-price quotation based on the actual cable route and equipment required.

Can you add extra sockets to my existing garage?

Yes. I recently added sockets to garages in both Huntley and Longhope where the existing number of outlets was no longer enough. I check the existing circuit first before deciding how the additional sockets should be installed.

Can you install electricity in a garage that has no supply?

Yes. On a recent job in Hinders Lane I installed a new garage supply, small consumer unit, three double sockets, two bright lights and an outside floodlight. I would first assess the route from the existing installation to the garage.

Can you improve the lighting in my garage?

Yes. Garage lighting can be upgraded where the existing fitting does not provide enough light, particularly if the space is being used for hobbies or detailed work. I can assess the layout and position lighting where it will be most useful.

Is it better to install sockets than use extension leads?

For regular use, properly positioned fixed sockets can be much more practical than relying on extension leads. I recently helped a customer who had been running an extension cable through the kitchen window because the garage sockets were already being used by a fridge and freezer.

How long does garage electrical work take?

A small job might take around two hours, while a larger garage supply with a new consumer unit, sockets and lighting can take up to two days. I assess the work before quoting so you know the expected scope.

Are you NICEIC registered?

Yes. I'm NICEIC registered and DMC Electrical is also monitored through Which? Trusted Trader. I personally complete the electrical installation and the appropriate testing and certification.

Whether you just need a couple of extra sockets or your garage currently has no electricity at all, give us a call. Kate can take the initial details and arrange for me to visit, look at the existing installation and discuss how you want to use the garage. I'll then provide a clear, no-obligation fixed-price quotation.
