1) Bathroom Extractor Fan Installation in Huntley, Properly Sized and Planned
This week I fitted a new bathroom extractor fan into a home at Camomile Green, Lydbrook, where the bathroom had never had mechanical extraction. The customer also wanted the finished fitting to be brass coloured, which made sourcing the right parts a little more involved than a standard installation. I found a suitable solution, completed the installation and the customer was very happy with the finished result.
That is typical of how I approach bathroom fan work in Huntley and the surrounding area. I don’t simply arrive with a standard fan and put it wherever is easiest. I assess the size and layout of the room, look at where the steam is being produced, work out a practical route for the electrical supply and extraction, and then source a fan that suits both the room and what the customer wants it to look like.
I’m Darren from DMC Electrical. I have more than 20 years’ experience as an electrician, I’m NICEIC registered and DMC Electrical is a Which? Trusted Trader. Most bathroom extractor fan installations take between half a day and a full day, with a fixed price agreed before I start.
Back to top2) A bathroom fan needs to suit the room, not just the hole in the wall
The first thing I look at is the bathroom itself. A small WC or shower room does not necessarily need the same solution as a larger family bathroom producing a lot of steam every morning.
I assess the size of the room and where the bath or shower is positioned. I then consider where an extractor fan will actually be effective and how I can get the extracted air outside without creating an unnecessarily difficult route.
Control is another consideration. Some customers want a straightforward manually operated bathroom fan, while others want to discuss a timer or humidity-controlled fan. Humidity control can be useful where moisture levels remain high after showering, while a suitable extraction rate helps with quicker demisting and removing steam before it settles on walls, ceilings and cold surfaces.
I’ll explain the options during the quote visit rather than expecting you to decide which fan you need beforehand.
Back to top3) Recent bathroom extractor fan installations
The Lydbrook installation with the brass-coloured fitting is one example of why I prefer to visit before pricing these jobs. The customer had a particular finish in mind, so sourcing the right fitting was part of providing the finished job they actually wanted.
The previous week I fitted a bathroom fan into a cottage being renovated at Broom Hill. The bathroom was very small, with restricted space to work and an awkward position for drilling the opening through the external wall. I planned the route around those restrictions and completed the installation within the day.
I’ve also installed extraction in a holiday cottage at Green Bottom. The surrounding countryside can become particularly damp through the winter and early spring, and mould inside the cottage had become something that repeatedly needed cleaning.
There was an additional practical problem: the work had to be completed while there were no holiday guests staying. We coordinated my availability with the empty period and completed the fan installation without disrupting a booking.
Those jobs are a good example of the things that cannot be established by choosing a bathroom fan from a photograph online. Room size, access, wall construction, cable routes, the route outside and the appearance the customer wants all affect the finished installation.
Back to top4) What happens when you ask me for a quote?
When you call DMC Electrical, you will normally speak to Kate. She will take the relevant information about the bathroom, what problem you are trying to solve and what you would like from the fan.
Kate will then arrange a suitable time for me to visit the property.
I turn up when I say I will and inspect the proposed installation before giving you a no-obligation fixed-price quotation. You can then read through the quotation and terms and decide whether you would like to go ahead. There is no pressure to make a decision during the visit.
Before starting, I plan the cable and extraction routes with the aim of keeping disruption to a minimum. Your electrical supply may need to be switched off intermittently while I carry out and test the work.
Once the installation is complete, I carry out the necessary electrical checks, complete the appropriate certification and arrange Building Regulations notification where the work is notifiable. I then show you the completed installation and make sure you are satisfied with the work before I leave.
Back to top5) What I try to avoid on bathroom fan installations
One of the easiest mistakes is choosing the fan before properly considering where it is going to extract from and where the air is going to go.
An awkward or excessively long extraction route can affect the choice of fan. The electrical cable also has to be routed properly rather than simply taking whichever route is quickest.
The control method matters too. There is little point paying for features you don’t want, while in other bathrooms a timer or humidity-controlled extractor may be worthwhile.
Another important point is making sure extracted damp air actually reaches outside. Discharging moist bathroom air into a roof or enclosed void can simply move the condensation problem somewhere else rather than dealing with it.
These are the things I look at during the initial visit so they can be designed into the job before I give you the price.
Back to top6) Choosing the fan and the finished appearance
I can source the extractor fan as part of the job rather than asking you to buy one without knowing whether it will be suitable.
That includes considering extraction requirements, control options, the available space and the appearance of the finished installation. The recent brass-coloured installation at Camomile Green is a good example: the customer wanted something different from the usual white finish, so I sourced around that requirement.
If you have already been searching for an extractor fan or bathroom fan near me, you don’t need to work out the specification yourself before calling. I can assess it during the quote visit.
Back to top7) Bathroom extractor fan prices in Huntley
A typical complete bathroom fan installation is £200 to £550, depending on access, the fan required, the cable route, wall construction and how straightforward it is to get the extraction outside.
Most installations take around half a day to one full day.
I provide a fixed price for the complete job upfront so you know what you are agreeing to before work starts rather than receiving an open-ended hourly bill.
The price includes the agreed materials, installation, electrical testing and appropriate certification, together with Building Regulations notification where required.
My workmanship is covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee.
Back to top8) Why homeowners and landlords use DMC Electrical
I’m NICEIC registered and DMC Electrical is monitored as a Which? Trusted Trader. I currently have 15 Google reviews, two Which? Trusted Trader reviews, along with customer feedback on Facebook.
For me, those registrations only form part of the service. I also believe the basics matter: arranging a proper quote visit, turning up when I say I will, protecting and respecting your home, keeping the working area clean and tidy and causing as little disruption as the job allows.
For landlords, I can also work around access arrangements and periods when a property is unoccupied, as I did with the holiday cottage installation at Green Bottom.
If you’re comparing quotations for a bathroom extractor fan in Huntley, check that you are comparing the whole job: the fan itself, electrical work, extraction route, testing, certification and the work required to leave you with a properly completed installation rather than just the price of fitting a fan.
Back to top9) FAQs
How much does a bathroom extractor fan installation cost?
Most of my bathroom extractor fan installations fall between £200 and £550. I visit first and provide one fixed price based on the fan, access, cable route, wall construction and extraction route, so you know the cost before deciding whether to proceed.
How long does it normally take?
Most installations take between half a day and one full day. Even the small Broom Hill cottage bathroom, where access was particularly tight and the external hole was awkward to drill, was completed within the day.
Can you tell me what size extractor fan I need?
Yes. I assess the size and layout of the bathroom, where the steam is produced and how the extracted air can be routed outside before recommending a suitable solution. You do not need to buy the fan before I visit.
Should I have a timer or humidity-controlled bathroom fan?
It depends on how you want the fan to operate and the moisture conditions in the room. I can discuss standard switching, timer operation and humidity-controlled extraction during the quote visit and explain which options make sense for your bathroom rather than automatically specifying the most expensive fan.
Can you install a fan where there has never been one before?
Yes. The recent Camomile Green installation was in a bathroom that had never previously had an extractor fan. For a new installation I need to establish suitable electrical and extraction routes and assess where the fan will work effectively.
Will I receive electrical certification?
Yes. I carry out the relevant checks when the electrical work is complete and provide the appropriate certification for the work undertaken. Where the installation involves work that requires Building Regulations notification, I arrange that as part of the job.
What guarantee do you provide?
My workmanship is covered by a 12-month guarantee. I’m also NICEIC registered and DMC Electrical is a Which? Trusted Trader, giving customers additional independent oversight of the standards I work to.
If you have a bathroom in Huntley that struggles with steam, condensation or slow demisting, or you simply want a properly planned extractor fan installed, give us a call. Kate can take a few initial details and arrange a convenient time for me to visit. I’ll assess the job, explain the options and give you a clear fixed-price quotation with no obligation to proceed.
