1) Outside Lighting in Huntley Designed Around Your Home and Garden
Last week I fitted a decorative outside light beside the front door of a property in Byfords Close. The customer wanted something a little more individual than a standard fitting, so they chose the light themselves and I installed it for them.
A fortnight earlier, just around the corner in Byfords Road, another customer wanted something completely different — a PIR security floodlight that would illuminate the driveway and front door when somebody approached, then switch itself off when it was no longer needed.
That is why I approach outside lighting in Huntley by first finding out what you actually want the lighting to achieve. It might be security, safer access, highlighting a garden feature or simply making the front of the house look better. I’m Darren from DMC Electrical, with 20 years’ experience, NICEIC registration and Which? Trusted Trader membership.
Back to top2) Outside lighting should start with what you want it to do
There is a big difference between lighting a driveway for security and lighting an ornamental tree because you want the garden to look good in the evening.
Before I quote, I look at what you are trying to achieve.
That may include:
- Lighting a front door or entrance
- PIR security lighting
- Driveway lighting
- Lighting steps and paths
- Decorative wall lights
- Garden feature lightin
- Uplighting trees or architectural features
- Replacing failed outside fittings
- Fault finding existing outdoor lighting
I then look at the practical side — where the electrical supply is, how the cable can be routed, where the fitting will work best and what switching or controls are needed.
Back to top3) Decorative lights that suit the property
Not every outside light needs to look like a security light.
The recent Byfords Close job is a good example. The customer wanted an individual decorative fitting beside their front door and sourced the fitting themselves.
I installed it, checked the electrical supply and left them with the style of light they actually wanted rather than trying to fit a standard product that did not suit the property.
If you already have a fitting in mind, I’m happy to look at whether it is suitable and install it where practical.
I can also supply suitable lighting when you would prefer me to provide the complete job.
Back to top4) PIR security lighting for entrances and driveways
For another customer in Byfords Road, the priority was security and visibility rather than decoration.
They wanted their driveway and front entrance illuminated when somebody approached at night without leaving the light switched on continuously.
I fitted a new security floodlight with a PIR detector so the light comes on when movement is detected and switches off again automatically afterwards.
Positioning matters with this type of installation.
The light needs to illuminate the area the customer actually wants to see, while the PIR needs to detect movement in a useful part of the property.
Back to top5) Repairing existing outside lighting
Not every outside-lighting job involves fitting something new.
I recently carried out several different repairs and upgrades at the Yew Tree in Longhope.
A high-level PIR security floodlight had failed and needed replacing. Because of the height, I arranged for someone to assist by safely supporting the long ladder while I carried out the work.
There were also entrance lights mounted on metal poles. One of these had been hit by a vehicle and had stopped working.
Rather than automatically replacing the whole fitting and post, I carried out fault finding first. With a couple of replacement parts I was able to get the existing light working again.
That is an important part of my approach: if an existing fitting can sensibly be repaired, I will look at that option before assuming everything needs replacing.
Back to top6) Lighting steps, trees and garden features
Outside lighting can also completely change how a garden feels in the evening.
On a recent job in Mitcheldean, the customer had some steep steps they wanted to highlight for better visibility.
They also had ornate trees that they wanted to make a feature of after dark, so uplighters were incorporated into the lighting arrangement.
This type of job is different from simply installing one outside wall light.
I look at the areas that need illuminating, the effect you want to create and how the fittings can be positioned so they provide useful light without spoiling the appearance of the garden.
For anyone researching outside lighting in Huntley, this design stage can make as much difference to the finished result as the fittings themselves.
Back to top7) Common problems with outside lights
Outdoor electrical equipment has to deal with conditions that indoor fittings do not.
Rain and moisture can eventually get into damaged or deteriorating fittings. PIR sensors can fail, lamps and LED components can reach the end of their life, and cables or fittings can be damaged accidentally.
I regularly see issues such as water inside a fitting, security lights no longer detecting movement or lights that simply stop working.
Another challenge is wanting lighting in a location that is a long way from the nearest convenient electrical supply.
That is where looking at the whole installation before quoting matters. The neatest route may not always be the shortest route, particularly when visible cabling would spoil the appearance of the property.
Back to top8) How my outside-lighting quotation works
I carry out a quotation visit before the work so I can understand exactly what you need.
When you call us, Kate will take some initial details and arrange a convenient time for me to visit.
During the visit I’ll discuss what you want the lighting to achieve, look at the available electrical supply and explain the practical options.
I then provide a free, no-obligation fixed-price quotation with clear terms and conditions.
If you decide to proceed, I return to carry out the work myself.
Your electrical supply may need to be switched off for periods while I make connections and carry out testing.
Once the job is completed, I carry out the necessary final checks, provide electrical certification where the work requires it and show you the finished installation.
Back to top9) How much does outside lighting cost in Huntley?
My typical pricing for outside-lighting work is £120 to £240, depending on the fitting, cable route and work involved.
Most of these jobs take around two to four hours.
The agreed price can include the design, materials, supply and installation, depending on what we agree at the quotation stage. If you have already bought a particular decorative fitting, as with the recent Byfords Close job, I can quote for installing that instead.
I give you the price before the work begins so there are no surprises afterwards.
My installation work is covered by a lifetime workmanship guarantee.
Back to top10) Why use DMC Electrical?
I’m NICEIC registered and DMC Electrical is a Which? Trusted Trader.

I carry out both the quotation and installation myself, so you deal with the same electrician throughout.
I also send customers useful information about electrical safety and everyday electrical issues, because I think understanding your installation helps you make better decisions about your home.
Most importantly, I turn up when I say I will, carry out the work carefully and leave the working area clean and tidy.
If you need outside lighting in Huntley, I’m happy to look at anything from replacing one broken fitting to designing lighting around a driveway, garden or entrance.
Back to top11) FAQs
How much does outside lighting cost?
My typical outside-lighting jobs cost between £120 and £240, depending on the fittings, cable route and work involved. I carry out a quote visit first and give you a fixed price before the job starts.
Can I supply my own outside light?
Yes. If you have found a decorative fitting you particularly like, I can assess it and install it where suitable. I recently did exactly that for a customer in Byfords Close.
Can you fit a PIR security light?
Yes. I install PIR-controlled security lighting for driveways, entrances and other suitable areas. A recent Byfords Road customer wanted their driveway and front door illuminated automatically at night.
Can you repair an existing outside light?
Often, yes. I normally investigate the fault before deciding that the complete fitting needs replacing. At the Yew Tree, I recently repaired a damaged entrance light with replacement parts rather than replacing the whole installation.
Can you install garden feature lighting?
Yes. I can design lighting to highlight features such as trees, steps and garden areas. A recent Mitcheldean project included lighting steep steps and uplighting ornate trees.
How long does outside-lighting installation take?
Many of my outside-lighting jobs take around two to four hours. More complicated cable routes or multiple fittings may take longer, which I’ll discuss during the quotation.
Do you provide electrical certification?
Where the type of electrical work requires certification, yes. I complete the appropriate final testing and provide the relevant electrical certification for the work I have carried out.
If you want to improve your outside lighting, replace a failed security light or add lighting to a driveway, entrance, steps or garden feature, give us a call. Kate or I can take some initial details and I’ll arrange a quotation visit so we can look at what you actually want the lighting to achieve.
I’ll explain the options clearly and give you a fixed price with no obligation to proceed.
