1) Changing Light Fittings in Longhope – Professionally Fitted From £86
Recently I was called to a property in The Wend, Longhope, after the homeowner had started changing a light fitting himself. When the old fitting came down, he discovered more cables than he was expecting and wasn't sure which wires needed connecting to the new light.
It was a straightforward problem for me to sort out, but it's a good example of why replacing a light isn't always the simple like-for-like job it first appears to be.
I'm Darren from DMC Electrical and I've been carrying out electrical work for more than 20 years. I live locally, I personally visit to quote for the work and I carry out the installation myself. Whether you're replacing an old pendant, fitting a decorative chandelier or updating several lights in a room, I can make sure the new fitting is securely installed and correctly connected.
Back to top2) Replacing an Old Light Can Completely Change a Room
Changing a light fitting is one of the relatively small electrical jobs that can make a noticeable difference to a room.
An older pendant or dated fitting might still work perfectly well electrically, but replacing it can modernise the room without needing a major refurbishment. A new fitting may also provide better light distribution, especially if you're moving from one central lamp to a fitting with several adjustable spotlights.
A recent example was a lounge in Byfords Road, Huntley, where I assembled and installed two matching light fittings.
Each fitting had three adjustable spotlights, allowing the customer to direct the light towards different areas of the lounge rather than relying on a single central lamp.
That's typical of the type of changing light fittings in Longhope work I carry out: sometimes it's primarily about appearance, but often the new fitting also makes the room more useful.
Back to top3) Decorative and Heavier Light Fittings
Not every light comes out of the box ready to screw to the ceiling.
Recently I fitted a chandelier-style bedroom light for a customer in Orchard Rise, Tibberton. The fitting needed assembling and, because of its size and the way it needed to be held while being connected and secured, I brought somebody with me to assist.
The finished fitting looked considerably more decorative than the standard pendant it replaced.
Jobs like this need a little more planning than simply disconnecting one pendant and connecting another.
Before fitting a heavier or more elaborate light, I need to consider how it is supported, how easily the connection can be reached and whether the existing fixing arrangement is appropriate for the replacement.
Back to top4) Why a New Light Isn't Always Like for Like
One of the most common surprises occurs when the old ceiling rose is removed.
A traditional ceiling rose can contain several cables because it may form part of the lighting circuit rather than simply being a cable supplying that individual lamp.
A decorative replacement fitting might provide a much smaller connection space.
This is exactly what caused the problem at the property in The Wend. The homeowner expected to find a simple set of connections but discovered considerably more wiring once the old fitting was removed.
Rather than guessing which conductors went where, he called me and I was able to sort it out.
Another issue I look for is earthing.
Many modern decorative fittings contain substantial metal parts. Where the fitting requires an earth connection, I need to make sure the existing installation provides what is required rather than simply fitting the new light because it physically fits the ceiling.
Back to top5) High Ceilings and Difficult Positions
Access can sometimes be more challenging than the electrical connection itself.
Lights positioned over staircases, in high entrance halls or on unusually high ceilings need to be assessed before starting. The correct access equipment and a safe working position need to be considered as part of the job.
That's another reason I prefer to see anything unusual before quoting.
For straightforward fittings, Kate may be able to take enough information initially for us to understand what's involved. For more complicated, large or awkwardly positioned fittings, I'll arrange a free quote visit so I can see the light, its position and the existing installation.
Back to top6) What Happens When You Contact DMC Electrical?
Your first contact will normally be with Kate.
She'll ask what light fittings you want changing and gather any useful information about the job. We'll then arrange a suitable time for me to visit where a quote visit is required.
I'll look at the existing light, the replacement fitting and the access required. I'll then provide a no-obligation fixed-price quotation so you can decide whether you'd like to go ahead.
When I return to carry out the work, the electrical supply to the relevant circuit will need to be switched off while I remove the old fitting and install the replacement.
Once I've finished, I'll carry out the appropriate checks, make sure the new light operates correctly and show you the completed installation.
I take care to work cleanly and tidily in customers' homes and leave the area as I found it.
Back to top7) Local, Personally Carried Out Electrical Work
DMC Electrical is a local family-run business.
Kate handles calls and bookings and I personally carry out the electrical work rather than sending somebody you've never met to your property.
I'm NICEIC registered, and DMC Electrical is also monitored through Which? Trusted Trader. We currently have 15 customer reviews, and my workmanship is covered by a lifetime workmanship warranty.
For customers looking for changing light fittings in Longhope, being nearby also means you're dealing with somebody who regularly works in Longhope and the surrounding villages rather than a company sending electricians in from much further away.
Back to top8) How Much Does It Cost to Change a Light Fitting?
Prices start from £86.
A straightforward light fitting replacement will often take around one to two hours, although the actual cost depends on the type of fitting, how much assembly is involved and how easy it is to access.
A large chandelier that needs assembling and supporting while it is installed is clearly a different job from replacing a simple pendant.
Very high ceilings, staircase positions or unexpected wiring behind the existing fitting can also affect what's involved.
That's why I provide a fixed price for the agreed work rather than leaving you wondering what the final bill will be.
Back to top9) Thinking About Changing Your Light Fittings?
If you're replacing outdated pendants, fitting new decorative lights or you've already taken an old light down and discovered more wiring than expected, I'm happy to take a look.
For homeowners and landlords searching for an electrician for changing light fittings in Longhope, I can supply and install suitable replacement fittings or install lights you've already purchased.
The important part is making sure the fitting suits the location, is properly supported and is connected correctly.
Back to top10) FAQs
How much does it cost to change a light fitting?
My prices start from £86. The final price depends on the type of light, whether it needs assembling, its weight and how easy the fitting is to access, and I'll provide a fixed price for the agreed work.
Can you fit a light I've already bought?
Yes. Many customers buy their own decorative or feature lights and ask me to install them. If it's an unusual, heavy or complicated fitting, it's useful for me to see it before the installation date.
Why are there so many wires behind my ceiling light?
Older ceiling roses can form part of the lighting circuit, so there may be several cables rather than just one supply to the lamp. I recently dealt with exactly this situation in Longhope after a homeowner removed an existing fitting and wasn't sure how the replacement should be connected.
Can you fit chandeliers and heavy light fittings?
Yes, subject to checking the fitting, its support and the installation location. For a recent chandelier-style bedroom fitting I brought assistance because the light needed to be held securely while it was being fitted.
Do metal light fittings need an earth?
Some metal light fittings require an earth connection. I check the requirements of the fitting and the existing wiring before installing it rather than assuming every replacement light can simply be connected in the same way as the old one.
Can you change lights on high ceilings or over stairs?
Potentially, yes, but I would normally want to assess the access first. High ceilings and awkward positions can require different access arrangements, so I take this into account when preparing the quote.
Are you NICEIC registered?
Yes. I'm NICEIC registered and DMC Electrical is also monitored through Which? Trusted Trader. My installation workmanship is covered by a lifetime workmanship warranty.
